I've asked quite a few people about their AGI definitions, and the main thing I can report is that there's very little agreement.
The main buckets of definitions are something like the following, ranked from easiest to hardest:
1. Can do 80%+ of today's remote tasks
2. Can do 80%+ of today's remote jobs
3. Can do 80%+ of today's and future remote jobs
4. Can do 99%+ of today's and future remote jobs
5. Can do ~anything a human can do, without needing scaffolding
It seems like the popularity of definition is relatively evenly split across those! But those are all massively different in difficulty: there's a huge leap from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and 4 to 5.
Related questions here are: what counts as a task? I've asked a few people and seems like people have an upper limit of something that takes about a few hours, perhaps a day.
Also, some people who feel we already have AGI tend to have a definition that's something like:
1. Smarter than most humans at Q&A
2. Can outperform most humans, when given the right scaffolding and examples
Tl;dr: If you want to have less confusing conversations where you don't talk past people then:
* Be aware that when other people say "AGI" there's a good chance they mean something different than you think they mean
* When talking with people about AGI, clarify which definition you're using, and ask which one they're using.
